Shiro-abhyanga - Healthy activity for hairs


As we inspire a lot from a western culture with time we somehow forget our some major routine activities and one of the activity is Shiro-abhyanga ( head massage ).

The application of oil to the scalp region followed by massage is simply a Shiro-abhyanga. This is a daily routine procedure which was done by our grandparents and their grandparents so on but because of our busy schedule we have no time for this, that's why some of us suffer from hair fall, premature hair graying, dandruff. 
Here I am not saying deprivation of head massage is the only cause of this problem but the practice of this procedure can help combat this problem. 
In Ayurveda Panchakarma it is one of the procedures under Murdha tail. 
For treatment purpose specialized medicated oil is prescribed by a doctor is the accordance of disease and constituents of the body and specialized therapists performed this but as it is most ideal for routine practice and we cannot able to visit a Panchakarma clinic for this so I am going to explain some points to all of you to practice this at your home. 

So let's begin - 
It can be performed at any time of the day, but for cosmetic purposes for healthy hairs it should be done at least once in a week before hair washing.
In our home how you can performed this procedure?
Firstly preparation of oil select your oil according to your problem and availability of oil, then heat oil but always remember never warm your oil directly over gas take a bowl of water heat it over gas then put oil bottle in it, this keeps your oil warm as well as essential qualities of oil remain in it.

Then procedure starts - Firstly check the temperature of the oil is it tolerable to you or not then starts smearing oil over scalp region . for massaging there are some methods which can be helpful to you, it's your choice at home to do all the method in the same sequence or alternate this method while massaging or you can do it according to your convenience.  
  • Massage the whole head move your hand backward by applying gentle as well as firm pressure.
  • Then starts picking strokes means fingers of both the hands are moved as if picking up a tuft of hairs.
  • Palm strokes over the scalp region followed by rocking strokes mean you should massage by the rapid rocking movement of both the palm simultaneously.
  • Fist strokes - gentle strokes all over the head with the closed fist.
  • Squeeze strokes -  gentle squeezing of hair and lastly 
  • Pressing the ever part of the head gently. 
The duration of the procedure should be a minimum of 30 minutes, each stroke should be continued for 5 minutes.
After the massage rest for 15 minutes and then you should take a head bath with hot water. 


In earlier times Shiro-abhyanga was done by our elders which doesn't only provide beneficial effects to our hairs but also reflects the love of our elders towards us. If you are the lucky one who has someone to do you massage Shiro-abhyanga then never miss the chance. 

In this quarantine period spend your time with your family members do some Shiro-abhyanga on them also. Be safe and take this time very seriously do not go out take your life as well as other lives seriously. Eat healthy food, drink lots of water, and stay safe.

Remedy - If you have curly frizzy hairs for Shiro-abhyanga you should use nariyal oil with some olive oil but kept in mind olive oil should be in less amount in comparison to nariyal oil.
