Prameha - Ayurveda concept on Diabetes mellitus

Prameha  ( प्रमेह )

All of you might be surprised what is Prameha, what it means, why I am making a blog about Prameha but as soon as you read about it you all believe why Ayurveda is so authentic and precious.

so let's begin -Prameha in today's era somehow will be compared to diabetes mellitus. As we all know the majority of the population in India is suffering from diabetes mellitus, it is one of the most commonly occurred lifestyle disorders. In each family one of the members is suffering from diabetes either our grandparents or our parents.
According to Ayurveda, Prameha is one of the eight main disorders described by our acharyas. now start with what is Prameha?
It is a disease in which a person's frequency of urination is increased along with other many symptoms.

Types of Prameha - Prameha broadly classified in two types one is स्थूल ( in this type of Prameha a person became obese )
and another one is  कृश ( person became lean )

Causative factor ( निदान )

In Ayurveda, it is called Prameha is mostly a disease of a rich person as they were all used to comfort, consumes a variety of food, sweets, dairy products, excessive intake of jaggery, tendency to sleep many hours and lack of physical activities so became house of obese type of Prameha.

Lean Prameha - due to excessive panchakarma therapy, excessive physical work, less intake of food a person suffered from Prameha which lead them to become thin and lean

Symptoms ( रूप )
  • Excessive urination
  • Heaviness in body
  • Constipation
  • Weakness
  • Itching over the whole body
  • Increase in appetite
  • Laziness
  • Loss of weight
  • Dizziness

Prodromal symptoms ( पूर्वरूप )

Prodromal symptoms are the specialty of Ayurveda. These are a type of symptoms that start occurring before the actual symptoms of disease starts appearing.
Each and every disease has its own prodromal symptoms and treatment given during this stage is much more effective than after stages.

some prodromal symptoms of Prameha are -

  • The feeling of warmness in legs and hands
  • Bad odor
  • Always feeling of rest
  • Soreness of mouth
  • Hardness in hairs
  • Numbness in limbs.

Manifestation of Prameha -

Now how these above causative factors manifest into a Prameha.
Firstly these factors aggravate Kapha dosha which further causes decreased inefficiency of Agni as soon Agni efficiency decreases Vata dosha disturbs and when Vata dosha disturbs it leads to problems in Oja and ultimately at the end Prameha occurs.

Management -

Management of Prameha is not so simple according to a person's constituent, management changes.
for both types of Prameha management is different.
In patients of obese Prameha Panchakarma Shudhi is done and in Lean or Krisha Prameha - Brihan Chikitsa is done.

Now the most important management of all the diseases is by diets, what type of diet will be advised, and what type of eatery substances should be avoided.

Advised diet -
  • Munga dal
  • Yava
  • Chana daal
  • Saindhav salt
  • Aamla ( Indian gooseberry )
  • Haldi
  • Karela ( bitter ground )

Mild exercises, walking, and physical activities are also advised for Prameha patients.

Contradictory diet -
  • Milk,
  • Diary products
  • Oil
  • Jaggery
  • Alcohol consumption

Sleeping during noon and smoking cigarettes are prohibited in Prameha.

This is all about Prameha.

The motive of my blog about this topic is to aware you all of a problem that affected the majority of the population, to help you know whether in Ayurveda this problem has a solution or not whether you should consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or not. I hope you all may find your questions.
